"Pulled back in time to Japan's ancient past, Japanese high school girl Kagome finds her destiny linked to a doglike half-demon named Inu-Yasha -- who remembers Kagome's previous incarnation as the woman who killed him -- and to the Shikon Jewel, or "Jewel of the Four Souls," which can fulfill the greatest dreams of any man or demon. Now Kagome and Inu-Yasha must work together to search for the scattered shards of the jewel before everyone's worst nightmares are given the power they need to come true."
Famous manga artist Rumiko Takahashi, the "Queen of Romantic Comedy" returns with a new fantasy series. The creator Ranma ½ and Maison Ikkoku sets this fairy tale in Japan's feudal era where warlords rule the land and demons roam the country-side. Inu-Yasha has a similar feel to Ranma ½ as Kagome and Inu-Yasha share an Akane-Ranma type relationship (i.e. they are always quarelling). However, this new series is more plot driven as the pair race to find the broken shards of the Shikon jewel.
For Ranma readers, they might be surprised to find the level of violence has been tuned up just a notch. It's not unusual to see arms and limbs being hacked off during battles which lend to a lot of blood. Much of the character themes of Inu-Yasha are derived from Japanese traditional legends, and the history/folk-lore lend to an entertaining and informative backdrop. Inu-Yasha is easy to read, with lots of action and a great story. And of course there's the romance and comedy.
